    SUMMARY:

    Plans and provides direct services to students with visual impairment. Assesses students and plans instruction and intervention to eliminate or reduce problems or impairments that interfere with students’ ability to derive full benefit from the educational program.


    BASIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Model core organizational beliefs and values; communicate openly and effectively within and across teams to maximize student success.
      • Articulate the district mission and goals in the area of visual impairment services to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.
    • Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the visual impairment program and implement changes based on the findings including selection of adaptive materials and equipment.
    • Assess students with disabilities and determine eligibility for services; participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to assist with the interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and goal setting for students according to district procedures.
    • Plan and provide direct and consultative services consistent with visual goals contained in students’ Individual Education Plans (IEP).
    • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level, interests, and needs of the student; establish control and administer discipline according to the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
    • Design, construct, and alter equipment; provide students with adaptive equipment and devices; adapt or recommend adaptation of the school environment.
    • Evaluate student progress.
    • Consult parents, teachers, and administrators concerning the educational needs and progress of students.
    • Provide staff development training in assigned school(s) to assist school personnel understanding of the visual impairment program.
    • Establish and maintain professional communication with parents, students, and district personnel; ensure that all interactions are supportive, courteous, and respectful.
    • Participate in special education meetings, campus committees, etc. as requested by supervisor.
    • Prepare reports and maintain appropriate documentation including goals, objectives and schedules in accordance with local, state and federal guidelines.
    • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy in the areas of assessment, placement, and planning for special education services; comply with all district and local campus routines and regulations, and verbal and written directives.
    • Pursue professional development activities that align with district goals and initiatives and current professional research.
    • Comply with the Employee Standards of Conduct.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.


    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • None


    SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
    • Knowledge of diagnostic procedures, education of special education students, human development, and learning theories
    • Knowledge of medical information and indications for visual impairment services
    • Ability to keep technical and professional records and to make appropriate reports and recommendations
    • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
    • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills


    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education/Certification:
    • Bachelor’s degree in education or related program
    • Master’s degree (preferred)
    • Valid Texas special education certification and visually handicapped certification
    Experience:
    • One (1) year successful experience as a special education teacher


    MENTAL/PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
    • Maintain emotional control under stress
    • Regular district-wide travel to multiple work locations as assigned
    • Frequent standing, stooping, bending, reaching, pulling, pushing, and lifting
    • Moderate lifting and carrying required in working with special education students
